Valentines Day Decorating, with a twist

This is how I like to 'decorate' for holidays. Most of the time I veer away from cutesy decorating and tend to chose things that have a more quirky, thought-provoking sensibility. Maybe its an unconscious attempt to use my liberal arts degree in day-to-day life, or maybe... I'm just a geek.

My Valentines Day Door Decor
Let me get right to it. Exhibit A: Is Love anatomical? What do you think?

Okay, thats enough with the lofty questions. TGIF, friends. Its been a good week for me. I wish the same for you too. Have a swell weekend!

When prompting is needed

At some point or another, everyone needs a reminder to press on. Push away all that doesn't matter and refocus on the important things in life. Here is my reminder. Its a little doodle I did, inspired by this tumblr bit. I was so happy with how it turned out, I awarded it a frame and a permanent spot on my desk. Whimsical and architecturally clad (my favorite combo) this doodle has become something I refer to often and will treasure for years to come.

A monumental moment for moi

People, I made something. Something... to eat and I am so incredibly proud of myself! Honestly, I haven't been this proud since I ran my marathon last December. Hah. Here is a girl that ruins her grilled cheese. I mean, chars her grilled cheese to a dehydrated hunk of black ash. Think petrified wood. Thats the kind of 'cook' I am and now I can finally pat myself on the back. Its been a long time coming.

Today, I resolved to make carrot cake. With all the carrot cupcake, carrot cake, bunny pins on pinterest, I couldn't get the stuff out of my head. So, I decided to take the plunge. I elected to try the Reader's Digest Winning Carrot Cake Recipe, mostly because of its title "Winning Carrot Cake". With minimal tweaking (ahem, I do not have an electric mixer), this cake turned out exactly as I intended it to. Moist, carroty, with the occasional walnut crunch.

This Carrot Cake did win.
What an excellent day! As a precursor, I made asparagus topped with fried eggs with parmesan. Add salt, pepper and paprika. C'est simple et magnifique!

The Perfect Rain Boots

A few days ago, Joanna Goddard, the wonderful writer of A Cup of Jo posted this piece about rain boots. I am the proud owner of one of the pairs of boots she wrote about and want to attest to their greatness!

Here is my pair!

Loeffler Randall LR Rain Bootie, in Black
This is my story. In August I began searching, searching for a good pair of winter boots. My parents reminded me again and again that a good pair of boots was essential for my survival and happiness in New York's colder climate. I searched website upon website searching for a pair of warm, waterproof boots for the upcoming winter. I am known to be particular about clothes and jewelery and I am certainly overparticular about shoes. Settling on a pair of boots without absolutely loving them was just not an option.

In came Loeffler Randall. When I saw the green lace up LRs I was intrigued. When I saw the black lace ups, I knew that I had found the shoes for me. Although they do not have the 'ultra warm lining' that I originally thought was necessary, they are *waterproof* and functional without being clunky. They are technically rain boots, but waterproof anything works in snow and this pair does a bang-up job of keeping my feet dry. I have a whole sock drawer full of cozy woolies to wear under these babies to keep my toes warm.  Undoubtedly, these have become my very favorite winter shoes. I've spied other winter boots that ladies are walking around the streets in these days and am not envious of their choices. Although our winter has been mild, I have worn my booties almost everyday we have been in New York. Loeffler Randall, you have supplied me with a most excellent and elegant winter essential. Thank you!

Geometric Embroidery Necklace

Necklace found on Etsy
Before Christmas, I made a trip to visit my brother at his school, Hampden Sydney. We took a trip to the nearby town of Farmville where I found this great image of a diamond on a local jewelery store logo. I applied the design to a little something I found on pinterest and completed this project over the holidays. Suddenly Found provided an amazing tutorial. Here is what I turned out!
